Understand the organization chart
Find a position in the org chart, inspect who it reports to, and check how an approved reporting change appears on different dates.

The org chart shows which positions report to other positions. An employee’s assignment can add a name to the chart, but the reporting relationship belongs to the position.
Before you begin
Use the instructor’s separate staffing practice organization. It should have a coordinator, a manager position, a top-level position, and an eliminated example with retained history. You need permission to view the included departments. Editing requires permission to manage the relevant positions.
Find the coordinator and its manager
- Open Workforce > Org chart.
- Select June 30, 2027.
- Find the prepared Patient Services Coordinator by its position number.
- Follow the reporting line to the position directly above it.
- Open the coordinator’s details and compare its Reports to value with the chart.
They should identify the same manager position for the same date. A person can be hidden because of employee access even when you can see the position and its staffing status.
A top-level position has no Reports to value. The chart may have more than one top-level position; you do not need to invent a common manager just to connect the drawing.
Change a reporting line
- Open the designated coordinator position and choose Details.
- Edit Reports to, selecting the prepared new manager and July 1, 2027 as the effective date.
- Save and complete the required position request and approvals.
- Compare the chart for June 30 and July 1.
- Compare the position’s Reports to history for those same dates.
June 30 should show the earlier manager; July 1 should show the new one. A saved draft alone must not change the approved reporting line.
If the new manager is unavailable, check its dates and your department access. FTE Tree also prevents a reporting loop, such as making a manager report to a position beneath it. The chart supports up to 25 reporting levels and will explain a change that would exceed that limit.
Review an eliminated position
If your permissions allow it, turn on Show eliminated positions and choose Update chart. Find the prepared past position and open its details. Turn the filter off afterward.
Including an eliminated position helps you inspect history. It does not restore that position or add it back to staffing capacity.
Check your understanding
Explain why ending a manager position requires reviewing the positions that report to it. Their reporting lines do not automatically move to another manager. Use Pause, restart, or end a position for that exercise.
Position Control: Continue with Correct a request or help it move forward, followed by the staffing, dashboard, report, import, and account lessons in your learning route.
Workforce Planning: If you have not begun the financial example, use the original full-time position and continue with its salary budget.
