Overview

Validation checks the complete import without applying any rows. After every issue is corrected, review the preview and explicitly confirm before FTE Tree changes data.

Do not confirm only because the file is valid. Confirm when the preview matches the intended business result.

Upload the file

  1. Select New import.
  2. Choose the exact import type.
  3. Choose Create or Update.
  4. Select the CSV file.
  5. Upload and wait for validation.

The import detail shows its status. You can leave the page and return later.

What validation checks

Validation can check:

  • Required fields and value formats.
  • Unknown, blank, or duplicate headings.
  • Existing identifiers and referenced records.
  • Create rows target new records and Update rows target existing records.
  • Job code availability for a Department.
  • Hierarchy placements, circular relationships, and the 25-level hierarchy limit.
  • Duplicate identifiers in the file.
  • Funding allocations totaling 100.00%.
  • Numeric precision.
  • Your access for the complete import.

If any validation issue exists, no rows are applied.

Resolve issues

Open Issues or Review issues:

  1. Read the summary and the first row-level issue.
  2. Download row details when many rows need review.
  3. Correct the source CSV.
  4. Keep the same headings supplied by the template.
  5. Upload the corrected file.
  6. Validate again.

Fix the cause across the complete file rather than only the first visible row. One heading or identifier mistake can create many row messages.

Review the preview

After validation passes, review:

  • Total rows.
  • Expected creates and updates.
  • Unchanged rows.
  • Warnings.
  • Effective dates.
  • Warnings that Position imports apply approved values without an approval request.
  • Any compensation or funding impact.

Open sample rows and compare them with the source information used to prepare the file. If the preview is surprising, do not confirm; correct or replace the file.

Position approval behavior

Position imports apply approved values directly without approval requests. The preview warns about new positions and fields that normally use approval.

Position create rows must provide all required position information. Position update imports include approved active positions, not drafts. Use a New position request to approve a draft.

Confirm the import

  1. Confirm that the preview is current.
  2. Enter an action note when required.
  3. Select the confirmation action.
  4. Complete MFA if prompted.
  5. Monitor the status until it reaches a finished state.

FTE Tree rechecks the file and your access before making changes. A Create import may create a record before another row that refers to it and may follow effective dates instead of spreadsheet row order.

Completed groups of changes remain if later work stops. In that case the result is Partially completed, not fully rolled back.

Verify the result

After completion:

  1. Review row results.
  2. Open several affected records, including the first and last effective dates.
  3. Run the relevant report.
  4. Compare expected and actual counts.
  5. Review import activity history.
  6. Record any follow-up correction or reversal decision.

Do not treat the completion status alone as business validation.

Download files safely

Import source, row-detail, issue, and result files can contain organization-wide or compensation data. Download access follows the information in the file, not merely access to the import page.

Store downloads according to your organization’s data policy and remove local copies when they are no longer needed.

If the import does not finish

Review the status, issues, and completed counts. Do not upload a duplicate file until you know which changes already finished.

Follow Recover or reverse an import and Import will not validate or complete.

Common questions

Why does validation pass but confirmation fail?

FTE Tree rechecks access, available choices, and current information before applying changes. Another change after validation can make the preview out of date.

Does CSV row order always control create order?

No. FTE Tree may create a record before another row that refers to it and may follow effective dates instead of spreadsheet row order.

Why can I see the import but not download its file?

The file can contain protected information beyond what your current access allows.
