Complete training guide
Choose your edition and work through the lessons in order. Each lesson explains what to do and how to check the result.
Updated September 26, 2026
This guide teaches the main FTE Tree workflows through a connected example: approve a position, assign an employee, and follow later changes. Workforce Planning lessons add budgets, employee costs, and proposed changes so you can explain both the records and their results.
Choose the path for your edition below. You can read along without changing records. For hands-on practice, first ask your instructor to prepare a practice organization, the required access, and a separate reviewer for approval steps. Each lesson explains what you need and how to check the result.
Before you begin: practice organization and example
Use the edition your organization subscribes to. Your role determines which steps you can perform; an assigned reviewer may complete the approval steps with you. An administrator can confirm your edition and access.
Your instructor prepares a practice organization and separate requester and reviewer accounts. The Quick start uses a completed demonstration. The creation lessons use separate practice records, so you do not need to reset an organization or duplicate an employee.
Both editions follow Avery Reed, a full-time Patient Services Coordinator in Outpatient Services at Evergreen Health. You will create and approve a position starting January 1, 2027, then assign Avery. Full-time is 1 FTE, short for full-time equivalent.
Use separate practice records for later staffing changes so the original position remains available for comparison. If you have already created and staffed this position in the same practice organization, continue from the next lesson using those records.
The Workforce Planning financial example
The financial lessons add these amounts to the approved position and Avery’s assignment. Position control learners do not need budget, pay, benefit, or workforce plan records.
| What you will enter or calculate | Main example |
|---|---|
| Approved position and Avery’s assignment | 1 FTE each |
| Yearly salary budget | $70,000 |
| Avery’s yearly salary | $60,000 |
| Estimated benefits | 20% of salary |
| Budget including benefits | $70,000 + $14,000 = $84,000 |
| Employee cost including benefits | $60,000 + $12,000 = $72,000 |
| Proposed salary increase | 5%, or $3,000 |
| Proposed employee cost | $63,000 + $12,600 = $75,600 |
Each lesson explains its calculation. Benefits are an estimate for planning; recorded employee pay is not confirmation of a payroll payment.
Make the learning stick
After a lesson, repeat its main task without the instructions and explain what changed. For a calculation, start with the entered amount, show each adjustment, and explain the final total. If the result differs, check the selected date and records before changing the example.
For setup, billing, company sign-in, retention, and enabled HR connections, follow the prepared demonstration. Those lessons explain decisions without requiring a real purchase, deletion, or provider connection. Advanced financial lessons use separate practice records after the first full-time example.
