Position adjustments
Configure ordered FTE, pay rate, and annual cost adjustments, including bases, percentages, fixed values, limits, and availability.

Overview
Position adjustments let your organization add FTE, pay rate, or annual cost changes to Positions. They can be added directly to selected Positions or inherited through the Job code tree from higher-level Job codes. Adjustments enable costs such as taxes, benefits, annual bonuses, shift differentials, and more.

Adjustment types
Choose an adjustment type based on the value that should change.

The value field changes its label to match the selected adjustment type. For a percentage adjustment, enter 10.25 in Adjustment percentage (%) for 10.25%; do not enter 0.1025. The form supplies the unit in the label, so do not type a percent symbol there. Pay rate adjustment imports use 0.1025 in the separate Adjustment rate column; see Prepare an import.
FTE adjustments apply first. Pay rate adjustments change the Position’s Base pay rate before FTE Tree annualizes the result. An Hourly Adjusted pay rate is multiplied by annual hours; an Annual Adjusted pay rate is already an annualized full-time amount. FTE then applies once. Annual cost adjustments apply afterward.
Within each of those three groups, the calculation sequence is fixed amount before percentages, non-compounding percentages, compounding percentages, and then fixed amount after percentages. Choose the before type when later percentages should also apply to the fixed amount. Choose the after type when the fixed amount should stay separate from all percentage calculations.

Each adjustment appears as a separate line in the calculation. Fixed and percentage FTE impacts are rounded to four decimal places. Hourly pay rate impacts are rounded to four decimal places; Annual pay rate and annual cost impacts are rounded to cents. The rounded line total becomes the starting amount for the next compounding adjustment. Displayed percentages use two decimal places, while calculations preserve four decimal places.
Adjustment values may be positive, zero, or negative. Positive values increase the selected result and negative values reduce it. Maximum basis and maximum impact values are limits on size, so they must be zero or positive even when the adjustment is a reduction.
FTE Tree applies every adjustment in a group before checking the final result. A negative amount partway through the sequence can therefore be recovered by a later adjustment. If the final FTE, pay rate, or annual cost is still negative, FTE Tree uses zero, adds a calculation line showing that zero minimum, and displays a warning. A final result of exactly zero does not show this warning.
One Position can use at most 20 adjustments on one effective date. This limit includes direct and inherited Job code adjustments across FTE, pay rate, and annual cost calculations after duplicate handling. A change that would add a twenty-first adjustment is rejected, and the previously completed amount remains available.

Additional options
Fixed pay rate adjustments require a Pay rate basis. Pay rate percentage adjustments need no basis unless they use a maximum basis or maximum impact; a limited percentage also requires a basis for those limits.
For a fixed pay rate amount or limited pay rate percentage, choose how it behaves when its basis differs from the Position Base pay rate:
- Same basis only rejects the component when the bases differ.
- Convert converts the component to the Position’s basis. Conversion uses annual hours whenever an Hourly value is involved, so annual hours must be available for the effective date.
Percentage adjustments can use limits, and every adjustment has availability and sequence choices.

For annual cost adjustments, enter limits with up to two decimal places. For pay rate percentage adjustments, limits use four decimal places for Hourly and two decimal places for Annual. For FTE percentage adjustments, enter limits with up to four decimal places.
Turning off either availability choice removes the adjustment from future selections while keeping prior Position and Job code history understandable.
Use Make unavailable from the adjustment’s update page when the adjustment should not be offered for any new Position or Job code selection. Existing and historical uses remain unchanged. Use Make available to offer the same adjustment again.
Adjustments are not deleted through standard settings. Make an adjustment unavailable when it should no longer be offered. Existing and historical position, job code, and planned uses remain unchanged.
Effective dates and inheritance
An adjustment entry begins on its effective date and remains in effect until a later entry begins. Changes to its amount, type, basis, cross-basis behavior, and limits use the effective date on that entry. Changes to the order adjustments are applied or the duplicate setting begin on the date when the setup change is saved. Availability controls future selections; turning it off does not remove the adjustment from Positions or Job codes that already use it.
For a Position with a Job code, FTE Tree gathers adjustments from the full Job code path that applies on the selected date, starting at the top level and ending with the assigned Job code. It then adds adjustments selected directly on the Position. A dated Job code placement change therefore changes the inherited adjustment path beginning on that date.
If the same adjustment appears from more than one source, Allow duplicates decides whether it is applied once or once for each source. The order in which adjustments are applied remains predictable in either case.
