Change a position and check its history
Move a practice position, record changes on two dates, and learn how corrections and discarded drafts affect its history.

A new approved value can begin on a future date while the earlier value remains correct for the past. You will practice a department move and a temporary change in working time.
Before you begin
Switch to the separate staffing practice organization named by your instructor. Keep your original approved and staffed position unchanged. Use its designated position in Outpatient Services, with Inpatient Services available as a destination and the job code available in both departments. Arrange the requester and reviewer accounts.
Write down the practice position number. Other positions may have the same title, so check the number before editing.
Move the position on July 1
- Open the practice position and choose Change details.
- Set its department to Inpatient Services, beginning July 1, 2027.
- Review the old department, new department, and date.
- Submit the position change for approval with the prepared reason and any required files.
- Have the assigned reviewers complete their steps, then wait for the approved change to finish.
- Reopen the position for June 30 and July 1.
The department should be Outpatient Services on June 30 and Inpatient Services on July 1. Moving the position does not automatically move an employee’s own department or replace the employee’s assignment. Check who can access the position after the move and whether its job code and other choices remain available.
Put two dated changes in one request
On a second designated practice position, prepare these FTE changes together:
| Starting date | FTE | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2027 | 0.5 | Change from full-time to half-time |
| January 1, 2028 | 1 | Return to full-time |
Review every dated row before submitting. Confirm that the department, job code, and other unchanged details remain correct. Complete approval and check September 30, October 1, December 31, and January 1.
Prepare both dated changes before requesting approval. The submitted request keeps the exact changes you selected; later shared edits do not change what its reviewers approve. Use reviewers who did not prepare those changes and who have access to the affected departments on both dates.
The result is 1 FTE, then 0.5 FTE for October through December, then 1 FTE again. If assignments exceed the temporarily reduced position, review that staffing arrangement separately.
Correct an ID or abandon an edit
Your instructor should provide a practice external position ID entered incorrectly. Use the external-ID correction action if your access allows it. Confirm the position number and the correct ID from the fictional source before saving. An external ID matches the position to another system; it is not a new position number or an FTE change.
For an unsubmitted edit you do not intend to keep, use Actions > Discard draft changes. Read which changes will be removed before confirming. Check that approved values and dates remain. An active request can prevent discarding; cancel or correct that request through its supported process first.
Check your understanding
Explain when to record a later business change and when to correct an original mistake. Use Activity to find who recorded your practice change and the field history to show when it applies.
